Junior Reef Keeper Program

Junior Reef Keeper Program, Great Barrier Reef

Our Junior Reef Keeper Program aims to foster the next generation’s love for the environment, and encourage them on their path to becoming real reef warriors!

Young people aged 6* to 17 years have the opportunity to learn more about the reef ecosystem and all of its cool critters, while contributing to REAL research that goes towards protecting the World Heritage Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Learn how to identify and classify marine animals, how to survey and monitor corals and reef health, and how to become a leader who shares their knowledge and skills with family, friends, peers and the wider community.

JUNIOR Reef Keepers will complete conservation missions and come up with creative projects to support reef conservation and share reef health messages with the community. They will be the first to hear about school holiday programs and unique and fun educational opportunities.

Great family day out

A wonderful experience. We especially enjoyed our time with Natalie, our reef guide (and marine biologist). My eldest child, in particular, found it really inspiring – a great way to learn about, connect with and appreciate the reef.

Family Snorkelling

Our family of six had an enjoyable experience. We dropped by the office the day before to confirm our reservation and were given helpful information. We felt very welcomed. On the day of the tour the boarding process went well. You can tell the crew is very organized.
The journey out to the reef had the option of staying inside or out to enjoy the wind, waves, and ocean.
Since we were snorkelling in August when the water was cooler, the crew was very helpful in fitting our whole family with wet suits.
The experience in the water was a first for my children. They loved seeing the colurful sea creatures. The turtles were the highlight for us.
The journey back from the reef had a number of whale sightings which was a nice bonus.
A special shout out to Georgia who was helpful, friendly, and made our family feel very welcomed.

Family Holiday Highlight!!

We are a family of four. Our children are 11 years old and 7 years old. We all had the BEST day out at Lady Musgrave Island! It was well worth the 2 hour drive down from Agnes Water to board the larger cruise boat from Bundaberg Marina. Everything ran to perfect timing and was very well organised. The staff greeted us nicely. The boat was spacious, modern and clean. There were ample toilets and seating. Plenty of room to move around if you like. The nature videos were great to keep the kids occupied for the trip out to the Island. We were fortunate in having a lovely sunny day and calm waters, even though it was late July (Winter). There was plenty of staff who were knowledgable and very versatile in doing so many different duties during the day. The Glass Bottom Boat was exciting to start with for the kids to see turtles, coral and colourful fish. The walk on the island wasn’t too long, which was good. Just remember to wear a good hat when walking through trees so you don’t get pooped on! The sand and coloured water is amazing to see. The meals were good and well timed for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. Hiring a wetsuit for $10 was reasonable and worth it to stay warm and for protection. There was plenty of space to go snorkelling and for our youngest who was tentative at first, she wore a kids lifejacket and held a pool noodle to help her swim around in the ocean for longer. It was a well protected area surrounded by reef with loads to see. My husband and I have snorkelled before at the Whitsundays and this surpassed our experience up there even. We even were fortunate to see a Humpback whale and a dolphin on the trip out there! Highly recommend and well worth the price which includes so much.
